History

Special Children’s Friends was organized in December of 1980 by a group of parents and professionals who saw a need for therapeutic summer programs for children with special needs. SCF successfully ran their program for six summers until local school districts developed similar programs. Subsequently, SCF received community support and grant funding for a nationwide publishing project to develop children’s books which featured children with special needs. Publications included A Song for Susan and Duchess.

In 1988, SCF focused its efforts on developing an early intervention program for Hancock County, and in February 1989, SCF was awarded a contract by the Bureau of Children with Special Needs.

Persons and organizations interested in Special Children’s Friends are invited to join us in helping to bring services to children with special needs and their families in Hancock County.
